Cel doświadczenia:

Will melting ice cause spillage of water from the glass?

Spis materiałów:

  1. a glass
  2. some ice cubes
  3. a vessel with water
  4. a tray
  5.  salt

Etapy realizacji:

  1. Put the glass on the tray.
  2. Pour some water into the glass.
  3. Put some ice cubes into the glass with water.
  4. Add water to the very brim.
  5. Observe what is happening to water while the ice is melting.
  6. Pour a teaspoonful of salt into the glass.
  7. Add more salt.

Pytania do doświadczenia:

  1. Will an increased number of ice cubes change the result of the experiment?
  2. What proportion of the ice cube volume will protrude above the water surface?
  3. Which salt is easier to pour – fine or coarse grained?

Opis zjawiska:

Interpretacje wyników:

When freezing water increases its volume while the melting ice cube is losing its volume. Therefore, water will not spill from the glass. The addition of salt will not cause water to spill. Dissolved salt will fill the spaces between the molecules and will not cause water spillage either.

Ciekawostki:

  1. The phenomenon of creeping ice occurs after freezing winter and rapid thaw. Accumulations of ice floes reaching even over ten meters enter the land due to strong wind. Occasionally, creeping ice crushes some objects on its way. This phenomenon occurs in our country, too.
  2. Approx. 90% of the Earth’s ice is in Antarctica.
